Design for Repurpose

Writer: andriacodnerandriacodner

Near our home, we have the sweetest park, Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge (SNWR). Since we have lived here, we have gone to this park to bird watch, hike, cross-country ski, take family photos, and be a part of our community. Inspired by SNWR, I designed a SNWR event flyer that could be transformed into a bird feeder.

First prototype of the flyer advertising the event and activities. Designed with Adobe Illustrator.

The goal of this design is to give a second life to something that would normally be thrown away after the event is over. I believe in sustainable decisions for design. First, cutting out materials that are unnecessary so that there is less waste; second, repurposing the product for a longer product lifespan; third, creating a product that can be biodegradable or recyclable.

This flyer will not only advertise the event, it could be made into a bird feeder which would also become an activity for children (or adults!). This design is still in the prototyping process, learning how the structure works with various weights of paper and if the design can be easily understood when printed out.
